Coloured Diamonds

Natural fancy coloured diamonds are highly sought after due to their rarity and uniqueness; only one fancy coloured diamond found per 10 thousand colourless diamonds mined.   The colour in natural fancy coloured diamonds is due to the presence of elements such as nitrogen and boron which were introduced by nature during the formation of the diamond deep in the earth.  Colours range from black, blue, olive, champagne, orange, pink, red to violet.

To know if a diamond is natural, it is tested and certified in a Gemological laboratory such as GIA, HRD, or AGS. Once a stone has been certified, it has its own unique and personal ID which includes an ID number, measurements, weight, shape, clarity, polish, symmetry and fluorescence.

Here is a simple guide to natural fancy coloured diamonds:

Grading: Natural Fancy coloured diamonds are graded as either Light, Fancy Light, Fancy, Fancy Intense, Fancy Deep, Fancy Dark, and Fancy Vivid. The stronger the colour, the higher the price.

Cutting: Natural fancy coloured diamonds which appear as one primary colour with no secondary hue are the rarest and most expensive.  Colour is the most important factor in determining the quality of the diamond and requires highly skilled craftsmen to ensure the shape, cut and polish intensifies the colour.

Hue: Refers to the colour of the diamond and the purer the hue, the higher grade it is.  The naturally occurring elements in the earth contribute to the colour, however, scientists have come up with a way to mimic these hues in the laboratory using irradiation. These diamonds are called enhanced fancy coloured diamonds. This is where asking for certified gemstones is important to know what you are buying is natural.

Tone: Represents how light or dark a stone appears depending on how much brown, black, grey or white is present.

Saturation: Determines the intensity of brightness of the colour.  The more saturated a gemstone is, the more valuable it is.

Distribution: how evenly the colour spreads across the body of the gemstone
